In 2008, the academic hospital Maastricht (azM) and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) of Maastricht University merged into the eight academic medical centre of the Netherlands: Maastricht UMC+. Maastricht UMC+ is the first academic medical centre combining the functions of academic and regional hospital. The azM has 715 beds. With over 7000 staff Maastricht UMC+ is one of the main employers in the region. Annually, the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences educates more than 4000 students. The goals and ambitions of Maastricht UMC+ are laid out in the strategic plan ‘Better Health in a Changing World’.
Integrated care, education and research
The defining characteristics of Maastricht UMC+ are integrated patient care, education & training and research. All of these activities focus on cardiovascular diseases, chronic disease, oncology, and mental health and neuroscience. The research in these four areas of expertise is clustered in so-called ‘schools’. Each school combines research with the education of researchers and master students. The research themes of the four schools are directly linked with the academic patient care of the hospital. A fifth school, CAPHRI School for Public Health and Primary Care, collaborates closely with the hospital unit Transmural Care, in an endeavor to offer more coordinated and integrated forms of care. Jointly they form the cross-linked and fifth spearhead Primary Care & Public Health, which focuses on the innovation of care in the overall health care chain, from prevention to aftercare.
National and international leadership
Maastricht UMC+ is a national and international pioneer in research into the organisation of patient care, prevention, educational innovation and care for patients with chronic diseases. On the basis of this research changes in health policy and a new approach to health care have been implemented throughout the country. Internationally, Maastricht UMC+ is not only leading in biomedical expertise for certain syndromes, but also renowned as a knowledge centre on the topics of health risks, epidemiology and disease prevention, health promotion and health care organistion. As a health care institution, Maastricht UMC+ also caters beyond the Limburg region, including South-East Brabant and neighboring regions in Belgium and Germany (Euregio), and aims at a close collaboration with medical centres in Aachen and Liège. This close collaboration is enhanced by Maastricht’s central place, at the heart of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, and its geographic nearness to the aforementioned university cities.
Governance model
Members of the Board of the azM and the dean and vice-dean of FHML serve on the Board of Maastricht UMC+. The Board approaches health care, education and research in an integrated fashion and governs on the basis of the shared strategic plan. The Maastricht UMC+ Board frequently consults the Executive Board of Maastricht University. Maastricht UMC+ joined the Nederlandse Federatie van Universitair Medische Centra (NFU), a federation of Dutch academic medical centres.
An-Najah National University is Palestine’s leading academic institution in medicine and health care. Since the inception of its Faculty of Medicine in 1999, the university has made tremendous achievements in the promotion of medical science and care for Palestinians—the latest of these achievements being the An-Najah National University Hospital in Nablus.
Nablus has a population of more than 340,000 and is the second-largest country in the West Bank. The city is central to all northern villages, making it a natural hub for medical services to over 1,000,000 inhabitants. With only 24 government hospitals in the West Bank and Gaza, the ratio between hospital beds and the total population is 1 to 1,000. Recognizing this huge disparity, An-Najah’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, began construction of NNUH jointly with the Ministry of Health in 2008, establishing Palestine’s first university hospital.
Today, although construction continues, the hospital’s main facility is operational and currently treating patients. With 120 beds and a total area of 17,000 square meters, the facility hosts a fully running intensive care unit (ICU), emergency room, dialysis treatment, X-ray, ultrasound, and computerized tomography (CT) scan—making the hospital the most advanced provider of medical services in Palestine.
Welcome to the Web site of Al-Quds School of Medicine. As dean of the medical school, I am proud of the programme we offer and the quality of students we enroll since we started in 1994. I am delighted that you are interested in learning more about us.
The medical school is the major faculty in the Health Sciences complex at Al-Quds university., which comprises the other health related schools-Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public health, Nursing and Allied Health Professions
Although the School of Medicine does not own a teaching hospital, it is affiliated with the main hospitals in the locality for the purpose of clinical training of its students. Together they make up a 700 bed secondary/tertiary care facilities. However, The University is in the process of establishing its own teaching clinical center on the university campus with the creation of a level 1 Emergency center
The main mission of the medical school is to educate professionally competent physicians for the needs of the public health care system. The Faculty has recognised that biomedical and clinical knowledge, based largely on natural sciences, is of central importance in medical practice. In addition, medical students should consider health as a multi-factorial entity with cultural, psychological and social dimensions. Accordingly, the Faculty has reformed its teaching and learning philosophy and restructured the curriculum to guide changes in undergraduate medical education.
The purpose of the new education philosophy, is to educate experts of medicine, who are knowledgeable and responsible physicians for clinical work as well as for biomedical and clinical research and administration. It is suggested that the future physician has integrated competence and holistic view of patient treatment, in which scientific thinking, knowledge of behavioural science and ethics are integrated with clinical knowledge.
Our medical school carefully selects applicants who demonstrate the intellectual ability, personal attributes, and motivation to be successful in medical school, in postgraduate training, and throughout their professional careers. We also recognize and appreciate a genuine desire on the part of our students to improve the lives of others by preventing, treating, and when possible, curing disease. Our students enjoy an atmosphere of camaraderie and collegiality with each other and with their tutors. Beyond the academic experiences offered at our medical school, we encourage the development of our students as caring physicians dedicated to providing the very best care, professionally and personally, to all patients.

Teaching since 1752
Medical teaching in Manchester began when Charles White founded the first modern hospital in the Manchester area, the Manchester Royal Infirmary, in 1752. He was followed by Joseph Jordan, who opened a School of Anatomy in 1814.
School opens its doors
Various privately-run medical teaching colleges amalgamated to form the Royal Manchester School of Medicine and Surgery. The School of Medicine was officially opened in October 1874 by Thomas Huxley, one of the great exponents of Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. It formed part of Owens College, later to become The University of Manchester.
First degrees awarded
In the following ten years, teaching and laboratory space expanded dramatically, culminating in 1883 in a charter to allow medical and surgical degrees to be awarded for the first time. During the latter part of the 1800s and early 1900s many new departments were opened and Manchester Royal Infirmary was re-sited on land close to the University. The School’s first female medical student, Dr Catherine Chisholm, graduated in 1904.
Postwar expansion
A further grand expansion started in the 1950s under Lord Stopford, and was particularly focused on clinical departments. The new School of Medicine, in the Stopford Building, was opened in 1973 and took in 200 medical, 60 dental, and 20 nursing students. With a further 75 medical students from the University of St Andrews taken into the clinical years, Manchester had become one of the largest medical schools in the world.
New approach to medical education
In 1994, the School was the first in the country to move to a problem-based learning (PBL) approach to medical education. This develops the key skills required by doctors in the 21st century: the abilities to question and interpret information and, above all, to communicate effectively with patients.
Facilities
The Consultation Skills Learning Centre (CSLC) was officially opened in July 2012 by Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, The President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester. In 2011, the Medical School reception was refurbished.

The Medical University of Graz is committed to fulfill the mission of the University Act 2002 in relation to the development of a quality management system for quality and performance assurance in all sectors, especially for the power range “study, teaching and training” in a comprehensive way.
For us, a quality defined in this area not only through concerted activities for the achievement of quality in teaching and learning. It is essential that these are not isolated to see and evaluate, but interact.
This means that measures that are agreed to optimizing teaching not recognize certain points, but affect a variety of processes – and thus a large number of people – have. Therefore transparent processes are the basis for purposeful change.
